New Mexico’s medical marijuana a model for New Jersey

New Jersey will become the 14th state to legalize medical marijuana if Gov. Chris Christie signs a bill on his desk. The state modeled its legislation on New Mexico’s highly regulated medical marijuana program, although it may ultimately become even more restrictive. The New Jersey Star-Ledger took a look at New Mexico’s program, and Colorado’s program, as part of it’s “Pot as panacea” series. The series, including a 13 minute mini-documentary,  contrasts the two states, which are viewed as polar opposites. Colorado’s dispensary system is much more permissive than New Mexico’s state-licensed nonprofit model, which has been criticized for not licensing enough dispensaries to meet the demand for the drug.

In the documentary, army veteran and patient advocate Paul Culkin, explains why the drug is beneficial for those who suffer with post traumatic stress disorder. There is also an interesting segment showing a long-time AIDS patient making a purchase in Colorado. Secretary Vigil closes the piece by saying he ultimately hopes the critical components of marijuana will one day be sold in pharmacies via a prescription.
