The New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority was one of 34 organizations in 27 states to receive funding this week to develop or expand training centers charged with providing green job training for local workers in energy efficiency retrofitting, among other things, the U.S. Department of Energy announced yesterday.
The state mortgage finance agency will get $919,000 of the $29 million released this week, according to the federal agency.
The money released this week by the federal government will go to pay to expand eight weatherization training centers around the country or to start 26 centers. It was unclear from the federal energy agency’s release whether New Mexico is starting a new training center or expanding an existing one.
The money released this week is part of the federal government’s ongoing effort to help weatherize more homes across the country, which included $5 billion in last year’s stimulus package.
The money released this week “will continue to build on the Administration’s efforts to expand the green workforce and build a self-sustaining energy retrofit industry that creates high-quality jobs, while improving the environment and saving energy,” the agency’s news release said.
