Udall’s filibuster reform subject at national conference

At the America’s Future Now! conference in Washington, D.C., Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill, told the group of progressives that he worries filibuster reform, a proposal touted by New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall, might eliminate a valuable tool.

According to Senatus (via Roll Call), Durbin said “he is hesitant to support New Mexico Democratic Sen. Tom Udall’s attempt to limit the filibuster in the 112th Congress.”

However, later in the speech, he expressed support for filibuster reform proposals and mentioned Udall by name.

“I’m in favor of the reforms, Tom Udall and others are talking about significant reforms that move us forward. But we are dealing with something that has been used for our purposes too,” Durbin continued. “We have to find a reasonable way to continue the protection of minority rights in the United States Senate but beyond the abuse of this function that we see today.”
