Rep. Ben Ray Luján and dozens of other members of Congress sent a letter to Tony Hayward, the CEO of BP, calling on the company to halt a $10 billion dividend payment to stockholders. Luján and the other members of Congress are calling for the dividend not to be paid because of the oil spill, which the letter calls “one of the greatest environmental and economic catastrophes of our time,” that continues to pour oil into the Gulf of Mexico despite all efforts to stop it.
“BP’s efforts should be focused on cleaning up the spill and fairly compensating those whose lives and livelihoods have been impacted by the oil spill,” said Rep. Luján. “Until BP is able to fulfill these responsibilities, they should cease dividend payments.”
In addition, the letter calls on BP to stop a marketing campaign, reportedly a $50 million effort, “until you have done the hard work of capping the well, cleaning up the Gulf Coast and making whole those whose very livelihoods are threatened by this catastrophe.”
Polls have shown that BP is being blamed for the spill and the resulting environmental damage. So much so that a recent Rasmussen Reports poll showed that over half the country are likely to boycott the oil company.
