Amendment to bar EPA from regulating greenhouse gases fails

By | 06.10.10 | 3:44 pm

A resolution that would have barred the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating greenhouse gases failed today in the U.S. Senate on a 53-47 vote. Six Democrats voted for the resolution that would have almost certainly forced a veto from President Barack Obama.

Before the vote, Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., urged that Senators defeat the resolution.

Today, America faces an energy crisis, and the Senate owes the American people solutions – but this resolution is an attempt to bury our heads in the sand and ignore reality,” Senator Udall said at a press conference. “The reality is that this resolution would be a step backward for climate science and clean energy.”

Udall was joined by Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., former EPA administrator Russell Train and others at the press conference.

Evan Bayh, Ind., Blanche Lincoln, Ark., Mary Landrieu, La., Ben Nelson, Neb., Mark Pryor, Ark., and Jay Rockefeller W.Va. were the Democrats who voted along with the Republicans for the resolution. No Republican voted with the Democrats against the resolution.
