President Obama joined the chorus of governors and state officials across the country Saturday as he urged Congress to extend the boosted rate of federal government spending on Medicaid, the government’s low-income health insurance program.
An extension of the Medicaid stimulus dollars will help 30 states, including New Mexico, that passed state budgets assuming the boosted rate of Medicaid dollars. New Mexico legislators counted on $160 million in additional Medicaid dollars in creating the state budget that takes effect July 1, meaning if Congress doesn’t extend the additional funding the state will confront a $160 million hole at a time when tax revenues are lagging.
