After perhaps underestimating the amount of populist ire directed towards BP, Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, has now apologized for apologizing to BP chairman Tony Hayward. Reports indicate that Barton was forced to apologize by GOP leaders or face losing his spot as ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
“I want to be absolutely clear that I think BP is responsible for this accident, should be held responsible and should in every way do everything possible to make good on the consequences that have resulted from this accident,” Barton said. “And if anything I said this morning has been misconstrued to the opposite effect I want to apologize for that misconstrued misconstruction.”
House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., and chairman of the House Republican Conference Mike Pence, R-Ind., also issued a statement regarding Barton’s comment.
“The oil spill in the Gulf is this nation’s largest natural disaster and stopping the leak and cleaning up the region is our top priority. Congressman Barton’s statements this morning were wrong,” the Republican leaders said in a statement. “BP itself has acknowledged that responsibility for the economic damages lies with them and has offered an initial pledge of $20 billion dollars for that purpose.”
Democrats have been all over Barton, and Republicans in general, for backing the embattled oil company at hearings on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
