FDA advisory panel votes unanimously to approve ‘ella,’ new emergency contraceptive

Ella, a new emergency contraceptive that’s more effective than the existing drug, Plan B, was endorsed today by a Food and Drug Administration’s advisory panel. That move clears the way for approval by the agency, which, as The New York Times notes, usually follows the advice of such panels.

As a side note, I was struck by a beautifully written sentence in the Times’ story today:

The committee spent the day in a cold discussion of the sobering realities that follow moments of passion, a discussion punctuated by the clacking of knitting needles from Dr. Paula Hilliard, a committee member and professor of gynecologic specialties at Stanford University School of medicine.

Journalism students, take note: Someday you could be paid to write sentences like that.
