House votes to give subpoena power to oil commission

By | 06.24.10 | 2:07 pm

The U.S. House voted yesterday to give subpoena power to the commission that is investigating the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Although President Barack Obama created the group last month, he could not give it the power to compel people to testify or obtain documents from companies involved in the spill.

The House overwhelmingly voted in favor of the measure — 420-1, including all three members of Congress from New Mexico. The Senate is expected to also approve giving the oil commission subpoena power.

The only nay, perhaps not surprisingly, was Ron Paul, R-Texas, the libertarian Republican who ran for President in 2008. Reps. Gary Miller, R-Calif., and Devin Nunes, R-Calif., both voted “present”.

“We must determine what caused this incident and work to avoid similar incidents in the future,”Rep. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M. said in a press release. “Providing the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling with subpoena power will help them get to the bottom of industry and regulatory failures. Moreover, it will help to ensure that we are not faced with a similar tragedy in the future.”

Tens of thousands of barrels are leaking from the broken oil pipe a mile down in the ocean floor, and BP contained or burned off 27,000 barrels of oil on Tuesday, though just 16,800 barrels on Wednesday after an underwater robot bumped into the containment system.
