John McCain declares Mickey Mouse a Republican in interview with Albuquerque reporter

Republican presidential candidate John McCain is still touting Joe the Plumber, invoking the moniker repeatedly in the first minute of his interview this morning with Albuquerque reporter and blogger Peter St. Cyr.

Joe the Plumber, the Ohio man whom McCain first mentioned in the Oct. 15 presidential debate, doesn’t want a government that “…spreads the wealth around,” McCain said. “Anyone who makes over a certain amount of money — whack ‘em in a whole bunch of different ways. It’s called redistribution of the wealth. We’re not going to stand for that.”

He also said in response to a question about Republican allegations of “voter fraud” by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now — better known as ACORN — that Democratic nominee Barack Obama has a clear connection to the organization, implying that this would be a problem. He said there’s a “clear problem” with ACORN, although the only example he gave was that one registration was for “Mickey Mouse,” who he thinks “is a Republican, by the way.”

McCain, an Arizona senator since 1987, moved on to make the point that he’s a Westerner who understands the issues that are important in New Mexico, such as those dealing with land, water, the border and Native Americans. He also reiterated that nuclear power is a big part of his energy plan. It’s not a new technology; rather it’s proven and safe and will create a lot of new jobs, he said.
