Sen. Robert Byrd dies at age 92

By | 06.28.10 | 10:42 am

The longest serving United States Senator in the nation’s history passed away this morning at the age of 92. Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.V., was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1958, and had served continuously since then.

West Virgina Gov. Joe Manchin III, a Democrat, will appoint Byrd’s successor.

The Washington Post reports that no formal cause of death has been given, but Byrd was originally hospitalized for what was thought to be heat exhaustion.

In a statement, President Barack Obama said Byrd “was as much a part of the Senate as the marble busts that line its chamber and its corridors. His profound passion for that body and its role and responsibilities was as evident behind closed doors as it was in the stemwinders he peppered with history.”

“He held the deepest respect of members of both parties, and he was generous with his time and advice, something I appreciated greatly as a young senator,” Obama, who served as a Senator before being elected President, said.

Another good obituary for Byrd is in the New York Times.
