Gen. Petraeus cancels ABQ Chamber of Commerce speech

By | 06.28.10 | 3:41 pm

Gen. David Petraeus has canceled his keynote address at the annual Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce meeting scheduled for July 21.

He has a pretty good excuse, though — he is likely to take over command in Afghanistan after what is widely expected to be a quick and painless confirmation from the U.S. Senate.

The chamber is looking for a new speaker.

Petraeus was tapped by President Barack Obama to command the troops in Afghanistan after Gen. Stanley McChrystal resigned due to a a devastating Rolling Stone profile in which McChrystal and aides made disparaging comments about administration officials, including Vice President Joe Biden.

Last year, Albuquerque native and managing director at Kissinger Associates Joshua Cooper Ramo gave the keynote address. Ramo, the son of local celebrity Dr. Barry Ramo, was also featured in NBC’s 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics coverage, as he is an expert on China.

Other keynote speakers have included former Starbucks President and CEO Orin Smith in 2008 and MIT President Emeritus Charles M. Vest in 2007.
