Webcast interim legislative committee meetings, state lawmaker says

State Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones, R-Albuquerque, who pioneered webcasting in the New Mexico state Legislature, is now pushing for webcasting of committee meetings year ’round.

Arnold-Jones has asked a powerful committee that meets Tuesday to direct legislative staff to consider webcasting as many interim committee meetings as possible.

To make the task easy, Arnold-Jones has even proposed a couple of economical options — a video conferencing system offered by the New Mexico Computer Applications Center or the Legislature’s own webcasting equipment

“I strongly urge the council to direct the Legislative Council Service to pursue both of these avenues and implement one or both with the goal of providing access to as many interim committee meetings as possible in the most cost-effective manner,” Arnold-Jones wrote in a June 17 letter addressed to House Speaker Ben Lujan and Sen. President Pro Tem Tim Jennings.

In addition to sending the letter to Lujan, Jennings and the Legislative Council — the powerful legislative committee meeting Tuesday, Arnold-Jones also sent the letter to the chairmen and chairwomen of all legislative committees.
