AZ Gov. Brewer cancels border governors’ meeting after Mexican govs boycott

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer cancelled the annual border governors’ meeting, scheduled to happen in Arizona this year, after Mexican border governors said they would boycott the meeting because of Arizona’s new immigration law. But now Gov. Bill Richardson’s office tells the New York Times that Brewer doesn’t have the authority to cancel the conference and that Richardson is looking for a new place to host the meeting.

“Governor Brewer doesn’t have the authority to cancel the Border Governors Conference,” Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman for Mr. Richardson told the New York Times. “She may not want to host it for political reasons, but that’s not a reason to sidestep the tough issues that border governors must address, including migration and border violence. Governor Richardson will look for alternative sites to host the conference, with or without Arizona’s participation.”

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is a Republican, like Brewer, also said he supported moving the conference.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit to halt the Arizona law yesterday, citing conflicts with federal law.
