The Navajo Nation’s Supreme Court ruled today that President Joe Shirley Jr. cannot run for a third consecutive term as president. This ends Shirley’s bid to extend his time in office from eight years to 12.
The Supreme Court ruling came after Shirley was disqualified from running by election officials. Shirley appealed twice, up to the Navajo Nation Supreme Court, before losing his bid.
Shirley argued that it “violated his liberty interests and equal protection rights” according to the Associated Press.
The Navajo Nation Supreme Court upheld the tribal election law that bars Presidents from seeking a third consecutive term.
