The Department of Veterans Affairs has released new guidelines that will make it easier for veterans to receive benefits for post traumatic stress disorder. Currently, unless a veteran has been in combat, claims adjudicators must conduct an extensive records analysis to corroborate claims. In the future, a claim based on fear of hostile military or terrorist activity that is consistent with the places, types, and circumstances of their service, will be sufficient so long as a VA psychiatrist or psychologist confirms that the description of the scenario supports the diagnosis. The VA believes in the “overwhelming” number of cases, a simple review of service treatment and personnel records will be adequate.
“The men and women of our Armed Forces have sacrificed for our country, and when they return home they deserve the best care, including comprehensive health services,” said Rep. Ben Ray Luján in a statement applauding the new rules. “By making it easier for veterans to file PTSD claims, the VA is taking an important step toward fulfilling our country’s responsibility to our veterans.”
