Republican Congressional candidate Tom Mullins once again drew attention to his campaign for the wrong reasons — this time reportedly making a comment that “There weren’t too many white faces there in the room” at a religious ceremony at the Kewa Pueblo in January.
Mullins made the comment to a radio reporter.
Mullins is facing Rep. Ben Ray Luján in the 3rd Congressional District race, and Luján’s campaign publicized, though did not comment on, the remarks.
“I’m disappointed that they’re playing the race card,” Mullins told the Associated Press. “They’re going through every single little word people have said over the last eight months and trying to turn it into a racial issue.”
Laura Harris, executive director of Americans for Indian Opportunity, said she was “extremely offended” by Mullins’ remarks.
Mullins previously found himself at the center of controversy when he said that putting land mines on the border was an interesting idea that he heard while on the campaign trail. That also happened on a radio program before the primary election and gained national attention.
Kewa Pueblo was formerly known as Santo Domingo Pueblo.
