A spokeswoman for Gov. Bill Richardson has said he’s committed to avoiding layoffs as state government readies for more budget cutting, reports Kate Nash of the Santa Fe New Mexican.
Nash quoted Alarie Ray-Garcia of the governor’s office in a post she put up on her blog, GreenChileChatter, about an hour and a half ago.
State officials learned yesterday that New Mexico is $160 million in the hole three weeks into the new fiscal year. That hole could double in size if Congress fails to send extra stimulus dollars New Mexico’s way to help pay for Medicaid, the government’s low-income health insurance program.
