Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer suggests calling lawmakers in to tweak immigration law

Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer might call that state’s Legislature in for a special session to tweak a controversial immigration law, parts of which a federal judge stopped from taking effect in a ruling last week, the Arizona Republic is reporting.

Here are excerpts of the newspaper’s story:

“We need to explore any and all options, including the possibility of tweaks to SB 1070, to get the legislation implemented as soon as possible,” Brewer said in a statement e-mailed to The Arizona Republic.

Those discussions, which were characterized as extremely preliminary, have not focused on specific changes to the legislation, but rather whether it might be in the best interests of the state to consider alterations as the law makes its way through the legal appeals process.

The Arizona Republic goes on to say that Republican legislative leaders aren’t too keen on the idea while top Democrats say the GOP is just playing politics to galvanize voters during a hot election season.
