During Thursday’s gubernatorial debate on education, Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez asked Lt. Gov. Diane Denish if she had used the state jet to travel to a commencement ceremony in Roy, which is about two and a half-hour drive from Santa Fe.
Although Martinez has said she would sell the state jet, she has not said whether or not she would completely forego in-state flying. As Daniel, one of our live blog participants wrote tonight, ”I’m from Silver City. Far away from Santa Fe. If it wasn’t for the state plane, we’d never see the Governor. I don’t think city people get that?”
Certainly some of the trips she would face would be a lot further than a trip to Roy or Mosquero from Santa Fe. New Mexico is the fifth largest state by land area and it takes a while to get around by car. While travel in other aircraft would probably be cheaper than the jet, it would presumably still be a lot more expensive than travel by car.
After Martinez took Denish to task for using the state jet, Denish didn’t bite. She ignored Martinez’s sidestep into the issue of the state jet, coming back on rebuttal with “On the topic of vouchers…”, a word that Martinez has shied away from in describing her plan to give tax credits for private donations to help parents move their children to their choice of schools.
