Richardson awards stimulus funds to crack down on cockfighting, manage wild horses

Some of the state’s last stimulus funds will be used to benefit animal welfare, Gov. Bill Richardson announced today.

The Department of Public Safety will get $150,000 to combat illegal cockfighting, dog fighting and animal hoarding. The money will pay for an staff, training and materials.

Another $100,000 will be used to manage wild horses on the Jicarilla Apache Nation, where as many as 600 wild horses compete with cattle and native species for food. The nation would like to see almost all of the animals adopted or otherwise removed, the governor’s office said.
