Democratic Governors Assn. ad attacks Martinez on staff bonuses

By | 08.27.10 | 10:45 am

The Democratic Governors Association has released a new ad attacking Republican nominee for governor Susana Martinez for using taxpayer money to give bonuses to her staff and not using that money to protect the border. Most of that money for salary bonuses came from a federal program called Southwest Border Prosecution Initiative.

Martinez, whose home county borders Mexico, has run ads touting her record on border crime, saying next to the border, “When crimes spill over, I prosecute.” She has attacked her Democratic opponent Diane Denish for “giving sanctuary to criminal illegals.”

Martinez attempted to emphasize the administration of Gov. Bill Richardson and Lt. Gov. Denish, running an ad accusing them of “wasting millions” on a state jet. Richardson withdrew his name for consideration to be U.S. Secretary of Commerce after being nominated by Barack Obama; Richardson was under federal investigation for pay-to-play allegations at the time.
