American Cement and the Greater Gardner Neighborhood Association in Albuquerque are holding a Community Advisory Panel meeting Tuesday to discuss air pollution at the cement transfer facility on Edith, facility operations, lab analysis data regarding cement dust and installation of leak detectors to prevent fugitive dust.
American Cement agreed to install leak detectors as part of a settlement agreement with the neighborhood association. Residents, company officials and Albuquerque city Air Quality Division staffers held a series of contentious meetings last year regarding the plant’s permit application to operate 24 hours a day.
The facility’s neighbors objected to high levels of fugitive dust from the transfer station.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adopted strict new rules nationwide this month to limit air pollution from cement factories, but the new rules do not apply to transfer stations.
American Cement was bought by Grupo Cementos Chihuahua (GCC) in 2008.
The meeting will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Los Griegos Community Center, 1231 Candelaria Rd NW, just west of 12th street.
