The City of Albuquerque is getting a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to turn methane gas from the Cerro Colorado landfill into energy that will power a glass recycling facility, Sen. Tom Udall announced Tuesday.

Some of the gas will be used to fire a new kiln at a glass recycling facility, and some will be used for heating and hot water boilers at  the county jail.

The grant is part of the EPA’s Climate Showcase Communities initiative. Albuquerque is one of 25 U.S. communities receiving a total of $10 million for projects that will reduce greenhouse gases.
