The New Mexico Corrections Department has received $500,000 in federal funding to help maximum-security prisoners transition back into their communities after their release, according to the office of U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman.
The money will help the state agency “provide a continuum of support and engagement” for a year and a half after release.
Nearly half of New Mexico’s prisoners return to prison within 36 months of their release. That’s lower than the national average of around 52 percent. But in recent years the administration of Gov. Bill Richardson has touted its efforts to reduce recidivism by beefing up the state corrections agency’s re-entry programs.
