Bernalillo County DA wannabes on ACORN, ‘voter fraud’

While many voters (and journalists) are focused like a laser on the proverbial top of the ticket — the presidential race and New Mexico’s bevy of congressional contests currently playing out — there is a good amount of action further down the ballot.

The ongoing Bernalillo County district attorney race is one such instance of an action-packed down ballot race.

Incumbent DA Kari Brandenburg, a Democrat, is seeking her third term; Lisa Torraco, the Republican candidate, is standing in her way.

I got the chance to moderate a lively forum with these two smart lawyers last Sunday, excerpts of which will be broadcast Friday on KNME’s “New Mexico In Focus.”

I’ll put the full-length video of the forum here soon, but in the meantime here’s a snippet from one question I asked about ACORN and allegations of “voter fraud” that are currently circulating.

Keep in mind that the DA — the county’s top prosecutor — could be at center stage if and when any of the allegations make it to a courtroom.

And as you’ll see, Brandenburg doesn’t say much (instead saying that “ethical and professional responsibilities” compel her to not say much) while Torraco accuses Brandenberg of “dragging her feet.”

Is Torraco right? After you watch the three-minute clip, post your comments below.
