GOP still winning the generic ballot

There are so many polling firms measuring the generic ballot that it’s hard to make sense of them. But Talking Points Memo aggregates 20 of the most recent polls asking respondents if they’d vote for an unnamed (“generic”) Democrat or Republican for Congress. According to the aggregator, Republicans hold a nearly 5 percent advantage, although that lead has slipped a bit in recent weeks. There’s a nifty chart after the jump.

Who cares about the generic ballot, right? Well, it’s pretty handy as an indicator of national mood, which could play a significant role in the upcoming midterms. Here’s TPM’s graph of the last two years or so:
