New Mexico’s Motor Vehicle Division recently won an award from the Center for Digital Government for its new website that allows drivers to renew their vehicle registrations online and check wait times at local offices.
A bill passed by the state Legislature and signed by Gov. Bill Richardson earlier this year also allows MVD to implement online renewal for drivers licenses—but that hasn’t happened yet. A spokesman for the department told The Independent Thursday online drivers license renewals could come sometime next summer.
The award recognizes outstanding government portals and websites based on their innovations, functionality and efficiencies.
“The MVD Online represents the best in government-to-citizen state Web sites,” said Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the Center for Digital Government.
The new website, which went live last year, also allows drivers to make appointments to take the driving test.
