Republican Susana Martinez is leading Democrat Diane Denish by 8 points in the race to be New Mexico’s next governor, according to a recent Daily Kos/PPP poll.
The poll shows Martinez continuing to draw support from Democrats, whites and older voters. Although a majority of voters have an unfavorable opinion of Denish, she has the support of most Hispanics, younger voters and self-described moderates.
Here are some details from the poll:
- Martinez pulls more voters from the opposing party; 20 percent of self-identified Democrats say they’ll vote for Martinez; only 8 percent of Republicans say they’ll vote for Denish
- Denish has the support of more moderates; She gets 48 percent versus 44 for Martinez
- White voters prefer Martinez over Denish 56-38; Hispanics prefer Denish 48-44
- Younger voters like Denish, who leads 53-40 among voters 18-29
- More voters have a favorable opinion of Martinez than Denish;
- Bingaman and Udall are both viewed more favorably than unfavorably
