Freshman Democratic Congressman Harry Teague and his Republican challenger, former Congressman Steve Pearce, are neck-and-neck heading into the final stretch of the campaign. A Daily Kos/PPP poll released today shows Pearce leading Teague by 1 point (48-47), well within the poll’s margin of error of 4.2 percent.
According to the results:
- Teague has more crossover appeal; he has the support of 21 percent of McCain voters; Pearce has the support of 14 percent of Obama voters
- Self-described moderates prefer Teague 63-32; self-described independents prefer Pearce by 18 points
- Teague gets the vote of 21 percent of conservatives, but Pearce only pulls 19 percent of liberals
- White voters prefer Pearce by 21 points; Hispanics prefer Teague by 19
- Teague has slightly more support from women and Pearce slightly more from men
- Younger voters (ages 18-29) prefer Teague by more than two-to-one; But voters ages 30-45 like Pearce better
- A majority of voters have a favorable opinion of Teague (47-40), while Pearce is tied (44-44)
