Secretary of State Mary Herrera has approved Bloomfield Republican and self-described tea party supporter Kenneth A. Gomez’s registration as a write-in candidate for governor in the November general elections, according to state Elections Manager Don Francisco Trujillo.
The move drew criticism from Herrera’s Republican challenger, Dianna Duran, who questioned the legality of Gomez’s registration because Gomez has no running mate, according to the Associated Press.
New Mexico ballots include write-in space when a candidate has filed formal notice of his or her intention to run as a write-in candidate. Names for individuals who have not registered as write-in candidates with the Secretary of State’s office are not counted as votes.
New Mexico’s constitution states that voters cast a single joint ballot for both governor and lieutenant governor.
Gomez owns a driving school and portrait photography studio in Bloomfield, according to online corporate databases.
The Independent’s call to Gomez was not immediately returned Tuesday morning.
