Denish takes Obama to lunch at Barelas Coffee House

After his morning discussion on the economy with South Valley families, Lt. Gov. and gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish took the president out to lunch at an Albuquerque institution. The president tried chicharrones and huevos rancheros with green chile, according to a pool reporter and the Denish campaign.

Kendra Marr of Politico was the reporter chosen from among the media throng to cover the visit to the Coffee House. According to her report, the president took some time to encourage patrons to vote for Denish in November:

“I hear you guys have the best huervos racheros,” [Obama] said.

The owner, who has operated the restaurant for 32 years, came to the front to greet the president and Denish.

Obama said, “Here’s a steady customer. She’s gonna be a great governor.”

And then he proclaimed: “Let’s go see some customers.”

Obama weaved around the restaurant shaking hands and obliging to cell phone pictures. “Everyone know your lieutenant governor? Soon to be …”

“Our governor!” a man finishes the sentence.

“Tell everyone to get out and vote for Diane,” Obama said.

There was more hand shaking and Obama reiterating, “Thank you so much”

Shortly after lunch, the Denish campaign sent out an e-mail to supporters. It read, in part:

Dear Friend,

Today I was honored to join President Obama at a South Valley home for a conversation with New Mexico families about job creation and our nation’s economic recovery. By the time it was over, we were hungry, so I invited the President to lunch – New Mexico-style.

We went to one of my favorite places, Barelas Coffee House. Barelas is a local small business – family-owned – and serves some of the best posole around.

Hopefully at lunch Obama learned how to pronounce the Lt. Governor’s name properly. Earlier in the morning he called her Diane De-NEESH.
