Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson will not be flying in the America’s Challenge gas balloon race next week, his spokeswoman told The Independent Friday.
Rescue teams are increasingly pessimistic about the chances for Albuquerque balloon racer Richard Abruzzo, whose last transmission showed the balloon plummeting toward the earth at 50 mph. Abruzzo’s wife told CBS this afternoon that he made one last radio call, saying he was preparing for an emergency landing in the water off the Italian coast.
Abruzzo and his copilot Carol Rymer Davis were competing in the Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race when they lost contact with authorities Wednesday morning.
“[Johnson] continues to follow updates on the search for Abruzzo and Davis, and remains hopeful for their safe return,” his spokeswoman said.
