One in four New Mexico children lived in poverty during 2009, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Census’ American Community Survey found that 25.3 percent of New Mexicans under the age of 18 lived in poverty during 2009, an increase from 2008, the Associated Press reported.

In addition, the Census Bureau found that 21.4 percent of New Mexico families with related children under 18 lived in poverty last year.

The increase in the number of New Mexicans living in poverty wasn’t unique.  Thirty-one states saw increases in both the number and percentage of people in poverty between 2008 and 2009, according to a news release issued by the Census Bureau.
