Steve Pearce has received more money from the oil and gas industry than any other candidate running for the U.S. House—except Democrat Dan Boren of Oklahoma.  According to the Center for Responsive Politics’ Open Secrets Blog, Pearce has received $166,232 “from people and political action committees associated with the oil and gas industry since January 2009.”

Democratic Rep. Harry Teague, Pearce’s opponent, ranked 16th.

Both Pearce and Teague made money in the oil industry before becoming members of Congress. Pearce owned and operated an oilfield services fund and Teague began working in the oil fields when he was still 17. Teague eventually created his own oilfield services company.

On the Senate side of things, Sen. David Vitter, R-La., tops the list with over $500,000 in donations from those connected with the oil and gas industry. There are no Senate elections in New Mexico this year.

The CRP reported that “more than 20 congressional candidates have raised at least $100,000 from people and political action committees associated with the oil and gas industry, including contributions to their campaign committees and leadership PACs.”
