U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich

Freshman Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich maintains a large cash advantage over his Republican challenger, Jon Barela, according to preliminary third quarter fundraising numbers released by the campaigns.

Although Heinrich raised about 20 percent more cash over the last few month, he’s got 50 percent more cash on hand.

According to his campaign, Heinrich raised “more than $575,000″ and has “more than $1 million” in the bank.

Barela reported his best fundraising quarter to date, raising more than $456,000—but he’s only got $567,000 cash on hand for the final month of the campaign.

These are just approximate numbers, not the exact numbers that will come later in the month. Those reports will not just include fundraising numbers, but the expenses that each campaign had in the campaign finance period from July 1 to September 30.

“We expect a very close race in a swing district, but it’s clear that Martin has the momentum of grassroots support strongly and consistently behind him to move central New Mexico forward,” Heinrich campaign press secretary Marsha Garcia said in a statement.

“With one month left, our campaign is seeing tremendous momentum, and we are well-positioned to communicate our message fully and post a victory for New Mexico families in the First Congressional District,” Barela said in a statement. “Our race continues to be one of the most competitive in the country because New Mexicans are looking for new and independent leadership in Congress – and Martin Heinrich simply hasn’t provided it.”

The full campaign finance reports for federal races are not due until October 15. The end of the next campaign finance reporting period is October 13 and those numbers have to be reported by October 31.
