Diane Denish’s campaign today released an internal poll showing New Mexico’s Democratic candidate for governor only three points behind her Republican challenger, Susana Martinez.
That’s in contrast to all the independent polls we’ve seen in recent months; no independent poll has shown Martinez’s lead as less than five percent since a June 3 Rasmussen poll.
Denish’s poll, conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, shows that Martinez leads 49 percent to 46 percent over Denish. But it also shows that that more voters have a negative view of Martinez.
“The percentage of voters viewing Martinez unfavorably has increased 6 points since mid-September and 11 points since mid-August,” the memo reads.
This poll shows that 39 percent view Martinez favorably and 42 percent view her unfavorably.
The memo also indicates that the results are because of a rough year for Democrats.
“In a normal year in New Mexico where two candidates have the same standing, the Democrat wins,” the memo says. “In this political environment where the normal Democratic advantage is muted, we will need extra firepower in paid communications and turnout to push ourselves over the top.”
So far, both candidates have spent over a million dollars on ads. The next campaign finance reports are due on October 11 which will show just how much the candidates have spent in recent weeks on advertising.
