Rasmussen poll puts Martinez up 52-43

By | 10.11.10 | 1:59 pm

A new poll released today by Rasmussen Reports shows that Republican gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez leads Democratic gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish 52 percent to 43 percent among likely voters.

This is the fifth straight independent poll that has put Martinez in the lead by more than 5 percent. An internal poll from Denish’s campaign showed Denish down by just three but a Martinez internal poll put Martinez’s lead at 9.

The Rasmussen poll finds that Martinez has solidified her backing among Republicans while Denish has not done so among Democrats. The poll finds that 90 percent of Republicans back Martinez, but just 68 percent of Democrats are backing Denish.

The attack ads from the Martinez campaign seem to have their desired effect, while Denish’s attack ads seem to not have caught on. From the polling memo:

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters in the state share a favorable opinion of Martinez, but 42% view the Republican unfavorably. This includes 34% with a Very Favorable opinion and 18% with a Very Unfavorable one.

For Denish, favorables total 44% and Unfavorables 55%. These numbers include 22% Very Favorable and 33% Very Unfavorable.

Current Gov. Bill Richardson continues to have a very low approval rating. His approval rating stands at 37 percent according to this poll and 62 percent disapprove of the governor’ job performance. President Barack Obama fares better, with a 49 percent approval rating but a 50 percent disapproval rating.

The poll of 750 likely voters was conducted on October 10 and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percent.

Update:

Scott Rasmussen, who runs Rasmussen Reports, did polling for the Republican National Committee and for Republican President George W. Bush.
