DSCC to air ads in New Mexico

The Democratic Senatorial Committee reportedly will be airing ads in New Mexico on behalf of Democratic candidate Tom Udall, according to Advertising Age magazine.

The ad buy in New Mexico is part of a $15 million ad buy in four states. North Carolina, Minnesota and Maine are the other three states, “with the buys in Maine and North Carolina exceeding $5 million each.”

A DSCC official told the Independent it is their policy to not comment on any potential ad buys.

More money could be on the way, according to a quote from Advertising Age:

“At the end of the day, the current spending is a floor, not a ceiling,” predicted Evan Tracey, who tracks campaign ad spending for TNSMI’s Campaign Media Analysis Group. “This does two things. It flexes muscle — it’s got to demoralize Republicans and excite Democrats — and it locks in price.”

The news of potential ad buys in New Mexico for Tom Udall immediately drew the ire of those in the progressive blogosphere. Senate Guru, who follows Senate races and fundraises for Democratic candidates, said, “I have to say, though, that I’m very displeased with the DSCC spending a single dollar in New Mexico at this stage.” Senate Guru cited the large lead in both polls and money by Udall over Steve Pearce, the Republican opponent.

According to both the Washington Post and Roll Call, the DSCC will not just be spending their money on advertising. They will also be spending their money in New Mexico and other states on organizing operations.

The Washington Post wrote:

Rather than focus exclusively — or even primarily — on television advertising, the DSCC has already begun to put field organization in place in 17 states to ensure that no potential voter is missed in what is shaping up to be a very good year for Democrats.

“We have always felt field is crucial,” DSCC Chairman Charles Schumer, N.Y., told Roll Call. “For the first time, we had a better operation than the Republicans in 2006, and it’s one of the reasons we won. We’re working hard this year to maintain that edge.”
