The New Mexico Department of Transportation has been directed to use up to $1.1 million to repair the Lobato Trestle along the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway, Gov. Bill Richardson announced.

Richardson’s office said a fire this summer damaged the historic trestle, which that forced the suspension of regular trains from Chama to Osier, Colo.

The state transportation agency will use $1.1 million in federal Transportation Enhancement money, the governor’s office said.

“I am committed to helping the residents of Chama where the local economy depends on regular service of the historic railroad,” Richardson was quoted as saying in a news release. “I have always supported the Cumbres and Toltec as an essential part of our history and the regional economy.”

The Lobato Trestle, a wooden deck structure that dates back to 1883 is located about four miles out of Chama and is the second highest trestle on the 64-mile line, according to the news release.
