Denish, Martinez start off positive, but attacks come speedily

The anchors on KOB-TV took the chance to chasten the two gubernatorial candidates Thursday night in the final face-to-face debate between Republican Susana Martinez and Democratic Lt. Gov. Diane Denish.

Anchors Tom Joles and Nicole Brady started the hour-long debate by telling Martinez and Denish that voters largely knew them by their negative TV ads. So, the anchors said, without attacking the other tell the station’s viewers why you think you are the best choice as governor.

“I’ve focused my career on results. I’ve handled some of the worst cases in this state,” Republican Susana Martinez said, summing up the reason she believed she was the right person.

“I’m a job creator,” said Democratic Lt. Gov. Diane Denish.

Four minutes later, neither one had gone negative, a feat that caused Joles to quip, “We’ve just made history. The joke sparked laughter from the two candidates. But his

Joles’ joke got at the negative, even nasty, tone the gubernatorial race has taken for the last few months.

But the positive tone didn’t last long.

Minutes later Denish accused Martinez of meeting with businesses that practice “predatory lending.”

Denish opened up an invitation that she had gotten from an event that was hosted by businesses that practice “predatory lending.” Denish has made it a campaign promise to outlaw such practices.

Denish read from the invitation: “Diane Denish will end predatory lending and Susana Martinez has assured us that she will not end predatory lending.”

Martinez, asked to respond, didn’t directly take on the accusation, but said she believed that the private sector produced jobs.

Then, almost out of the blue, Martinez turned to Denish and said “We are not supposed to bring anything from outside. You brought something to the table. That wasn’t fair. That’s what I want people to know about you. You aren’t willing to follow the rules.”

Denish, asked to respond, said “Susana you’re on the side of big, out-of-state corporations.”
