Martinez’s office bought supplies from employee’s relative, Haussamen writes

The District Attorney’s office of Republican Susana Martinez bought supplies and equipment from a business owned by one of her employees at the same time the office also did business with that employee’s niece, Heath Haussamen at nmpolitics.net reported today.

The former employee in question is Janetta Hicks whose business relationship with Martinez’s office was well documented by the Albuquerque Journal. What’s new here is that at the same time Martinez’s office was doing $60,000 worth of business with Hicks’ company, it was also purchasing $2,200 of office equipment from Hicks’ niece.

Martinez has defended the deal with Hicks’ company, Titan Office Supply, as legal, but told the Santa Fe New Mexican last week that she  wouldn’t enter into such a deal again because of appearances.

Martinez’s campaign defended the purchases with the company run by Hicks’ niece, Haussamen writes.

But Martinez wouldn’t answer NMPolitics.net’s questions about whether the deal with KPM Enterprises created a negative appearance and whether she would make purchases from that business again.

Martinez’s campaign didn’t respond to questions from the Independent either about the issues raised in Haussamen’s post on Friday.
