The New Mexico State Police today distributed photos of a man tearing down campaign signs in Española, along with a reminder that destroying the signs is a misdemeanor offense that could result in as much as six months in jail.

The State Police also sent out photos of an unidentified man tearing down signs for U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján and replacing signs with those of his preferred candidate.

“As we move into campaign season our beautiful state will have numerous colorful posters; let’s be respectful of these signs and avoid the petty misdemeanor criminal offense that goes along with damaging them,” a press release from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety said. “When caught, a suspect can carry a fine and/or penalty of up to a half a year in jail.”

The pictures were taken at Paseo De Onate and US Highway 285 near the Española Plaza and near local Republican Party headquarters.

Allegations of supporters of other candidates stealing or destroying signs are common before elections, but it’s rare to see photos of the act itself.

In one case from earlier this year a Republican candidate for Florida state House of Representatives was caught on tape stealing his opponents sign from a yard before the Republican primary.
