A recently linked “death list” of U.S. House races shows that the Republican Party is not very optimistic about limiting losses to seats in the House in November’s elections.
You can view the list, which includes New Mexico’s 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts, here.
The list shows that the Republicans believe the 1st Congressional District is leaning toward Darren White Martin Heinrich while the 2nd Congressional District is a “true toss-up.”
Politico has more on the CD2 race:
One well-connected Republican operative told Politico that the list, if anything, understated the number of members needing a political lifeline. The operative also said the GOP is all but writing off the seats of Reps. Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.), Joseph Knollenberg (R-Mich.), Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Phil English (R-Pa.), and the open New Mexico House seat of retiring Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.), who is running for the Senate.
Many of these potential pickups would strike at the heart of the Republican base. Pearce represents an oil-rich district that has been under Republican control since 1981. Musgrave and Bachmann are among Congress’ leading conservative voices, and both have won elections in the ex-urban areas that were until recently GOP strongholds.
The “well-connected Republican operative” agrees with Swing State Project, a Democratic blog that focuses on horse-race politics at the congressional level. Swing State wrote, “The GOP is light – they are missing a lot of races. SSP has over 100 races on our House list – this one has just 75.”
Also, they say the “death list” label by Washington Whispers is a bit of hyperbole. “All it really is is a list of race ratings,” SSP writes.
Democrat Heinrich is facing White in the 1st Congressional District. And Teague is facing Ed Tinsley in the 2nd Congressional District race.
