A California bill that would legalize marijuana has lost support since September, according to the final poll of this election cycle by a California polling company, Field Research Corporation. The initiative to legalize marijuana enjoys a comfortable lead in Northern California, but the rest of the state is skeptical, the Field Poll found. Proposition 19, is opposed 49-42 percent, whereas in September it was ahead 49-42 percent.
If Proposition 19 passes tomorrow, individuals over the age of 21 could possess and cultivate limited amounts of marijuana for personal use. State and local governments could also authorize, regulate, and tax businesses that provide marijuana. The legislation would not affect federal law, under which marijuana would remain illegal.
California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana, back in 1996. Since then, fourteen states have adopted laws allowing marijuana for medicinal purposes, including New Mexico.
