Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal fails despite New Mexico votes

By | 12.09.10 | 3:37 pm

A vote to pass a defense bill failed to pass cloture because of a provision that would have allowed gays to serve openly in the military. Both New Mexico senators, Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall, were among the 57 senators who voted for cloture which would have brought the bill to an up-and-down vote.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., voted alongside the Republicans against ending debate on the bill while Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, voted with Democrats.

Earlier this month, a Pentagon report showed that repealing the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy would not have adverse effects on the military. Polls have consistently shown that a majority of Americans approve of repealing the policy that has been in place since 1993.

Bingaman has never supported the policy and earlier this year both he and Udall co-sponsored a bill to repeal the policy.
