The New Mexico Air National Guard’s 150th Fighter Wing, known as the “Flying Tacos,” will join forces with the 58th Special Operations Wing, keeping its jobs at Kirtland Air Force Base, Rep. Martin Heinrich said Monday. He said the Tacos’ mission will be replaced by three smaller missions.
Heinrich says the missions will save 1,000 jobs at Kirtland Air Force Base.
One new mission will involve search and rescue, including retrieving troops who are trapped behind enemy lines. Another is called Rapid Engineers Deployable Heavy Operations Repair Squadron, Engineers, or RED HORSE. According to the Air Force, RED HORSE units “are mobile heavy construction squadrons capable of rapid response and independent operations capable of 30 days self sufficient in remote, high-threat environments worldwide. They provide heavy repair capability and construction capability when requirements exceed normal civil engineer unit capabilities.”
A third mission will involve working with intelligence.
