Andy Nuñez becomes an independent

Rep. Andy Nuñez

Rep. Andy Nuñez switched party affiliations from Democratic to “decline to state,” or independent, Tuesday, just days after being stripped of committee spots by Speaker of the House Ben Luján, D-Nambe. Nuñez was a key part of a failed attempt to replace Luján as Speaker with Joseph Cervantes, D-Las Cruces.

Luján removed Nuñez from his spot as chair of the House Agriculture Committee and from the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican’s Steve Terrell, Nuñez is the first independent legislator in New Mexico in at least 20 years and the sixth to change parties since 1992.

Nuñez told the Las Cruces Sun-News last week that he was considering a change in parties but said, “I’ll never become a Republican.”
