Balderas confirms he’s ‘seriously considering’ a Senate run

By | 02.23.11 | 7:57 am

State Auditor Hector Balderas confirmed to Peter St. Cyr that he is “seriously considering” a run for Senate, echoing a report from Politico this weekend. This is the first official word from the Democrat that he is considering a run to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Bingaman in 2012.

Balderas told St. Cyr that he has not made any final decisions yet. He’s meeting with his family, supporters and a team of advisers, he said,  “to make sure that this is the right decision for me and for New Mexico.” Balderas also confirmed that he has met with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

“I think that it’s going to be young leaders that really have a stake in the next generation that really put forth ideas and put forth a willingness to work together,” Balderas said. “And I think coming up from the outside, coming from a community like Wagon Mound, and working myself up the ranks, my loyalty is to the taxpayers and to ensure that progress is made.”

He said that he is focused on fiscal reform, and noted that he has saved the state money while working with a relatively small budget.

The full interview, including talk about the State Auditor’s office and the current legislative session, is available below.
