Heather Wilson is “reaching out to potential staffers” for a run to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, according to Politico. It is the latest indication that the former U.S. Representative could be gearing up for her second Senate run.
Politico reported:
One operative was contacted this week by a longtime adviser to Wilson about coming aboard.
“It seemed like an initial outreach to test the waters for how quickly they could put together a staff and to see who was available,” said the staffer who was reached by the Wilson camp.
Wilson said in January, before Bingaman announced he would not seek a sixth term in office, that she was considering a Senate run.
Politico also reported the current U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, who defeated Wilson in the 2008 Senate primary for the open Senate seat ultimately won by Democrat Tom Udall, is thinking about running.
Pearce earlier called on Republicans to not be “hasty” in looking at people to run.
Wilson represented New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District from 1998 until the beginning of 2009. Wilson left the House for her unsuccessful Senate run.
Former congressional candidate Greg Sowards and activist William S. English are currently running for the seat.
On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, who holds the same district that Wilson once held, said he is actively considering a Senate run. State Auditor Hector Balderas said he is “seriously considering” a Senate run.
